Why you need a mudroom

As the colder weather sets in, it’s time to think about creating a buffer zone in your home to keep the outside elements from getting in.

A mudroom is the place to take off dirty boots, shoes and bike helmets, dry off the dogs, store school bags and sports equipment and contain all the outside mess in one easy-to-clean room. Here are some other benefits of this highly functional room:

Reduced Cleaning

Instead of mopping and cleaning the whole house every time the kids and dogs come running in from the rain, all you’ve got to worry about is a small space. As a result, the life of the flooring in the rest of your home will be significantly extended, as tracking of abrasive grit and dirt will be reduced to a bare minimum.

Extra Storage

A mudroom can double as an extra closet, particularly handy for off-season equipment such as surfboards, towels and tennis rackets.

Keeping everything in one place

By having your mudroom as the first point of entry and exit for all household members, with places to store all items, you have more chance of avoiding the daily last minute ‘where are my shoes’, ‘where’s my sports bag’ chaos.

Heat transfer

Mudrooms increase heating and cooling efficiency by adding a transition zone. The ideal mudroom has two doors: an outside entrance and an inner door and should be located at the garage, back door, or off the driveway.

Mudroom design considerations

To work effectively as a transition zone, some important things to consider in your mudroom design are:

  • Hard flooring options such as tiles, concrete or linoleum that can easily be cleaned.
  • Adequate shelving and joinery to help maximise space.
  • A floor drain to make those difficult messes far easier to deal with.
  • A sink or even a shower to encourage particularly messy family members to wash off before entering the rest of the home.
  • A seating area for comfortably removing boots and shoes.
  • Individual cabinets, lockers or baskets for each family member to store their things.
  • Direct access to the laundry so that dirty clothes can be removed and washed immediately.
